Epigenetic states determine gene expression patterns in the diverse cell types of the human body. Despite our advances in annotating vast coding and non-coding sequence repertoire of the human genome, mechanisms of epigenetic regulation are elusive. Epigenetic alterations, much like genetic changes, play an important part in human pathologies such as cancer and neurodegeneration. Synthetic Epigenetics is an emerging field aiming to explore ways to target epigenetic regulation, providing better understanding of basic molecular mechanism as well as charting new avenues for therapeutic strategies.
