Job Description
We are seeking a self-motivated, discovery-oriented research scientist with a proven track record in conducting mass spectrometry-based protein characterization studies. The Senior Scientist I is responsible for developing and implementing analytical methods for the characterization of proteins and peptides with an emphasis on LC-MS (intact mass and peptide mapping). Expertise in data collection and data analysis software for these assays is a requirement. Proteomics and pull-down assay experience is desirable. Additional experience with analytical and separation techniques such as capillary electrophoresis (CE-SDS, cIEF) is beneficial. He/She/They will be expected to independently collect and interpret detailed MS data, generate reports, and orally present findings within team-based settings. He/She/They will provide scientific leadership as a subject matter expert and provide feedback and guidance to a team of protein expression/purification, cell-based, and in vivo scientists. The Senior Scientist I will independently plan experimental work and execute protocols in support of group goals depending on departmental needs. He/She/They will maintain a productive and collaborative laboratory environment consistent with group and company expectations.
The position requires the individual to work with and in areas requiring select agents and toxins access (i.e. Biosafety level 2 laboratories). • Apply routine and specialized analytical techniques to characterize and quantify biopharmaceuticals. Maintain reagent supplies, instrument maintenance schedules, notebooks, summarizes results in written reports and communicate observations to ensure that colleagues receive data and guidance in a timely manner. Comply with Quality Principals related to data generation and reporting.

  • Actively participate on cross-functional teams and provide support to other groups and external departments. Openly share scientific expertise and collaboratively help the team to formulate rational solutions to problems.

  • Develop protocols, train staff, and maintain the laboratory consistent with departmental and company requirements.

  • Maintain a good and current knowledge of the scientific and technical literature pertinent to the project and necessary for development of state-of-the-art analytical methods, including the acquisition of necessary equipment.

  • Extensive experience with the application of mass spectrometric, separation, and biophysical techniques for the characterization of proteins and their degradation and modification products. Expert-level experience with SYNAPT systems for intact MS and Orbitrap-based systems for “bottom up” peptide mapping techniques is a requirement.
  • Highly proficient in using data analysis software such as BioPharma Finder or Protein Metrics.
  • A strong understanding of methods and procedures related to the production and characterization of biopharmaceuticals is expected.
  • Strong analytical and instrument skills and a thorough understanding and working knowledge of analytical method development.
