The Gasoline and Electrified On Board Diagnostic Controls Engineer will join a growing team of engineers who provide gasoline and electrified diagnostic control algorithm solutions completely through to the production of FCA’s Global Powertrain Development. The successful candidate will be adaptable as the project accelerates after project kickoff. Also, the successful candidate will work seamlessly with his advanced OBD colleagues who performed technology readiness level work on diagnostics for some or all of the technologies prior to project kickoff. The Engineer will identify multiple solutions to meet OBD requirements and benchmark FCA versus the competitive set; and will apply the inputs from the Advanced OBD development group per the production guidelines for either gasoline or electrified product.
The Gasoline and Electrified On Board Diagnostic Controls Engineer will provide leadership on an entire project, and provide management-ready project status reports of Key Progress Indicators (KPIs) to either the production OBD supervisor or the electrified OBD team lead. Also, the Engineer will provide insight and leadership for performing OBD gap analysis, prepare OBD algorithm performance goals for review by either the production OBD supervisor or the electrified OBD team lead. Duties include leading OBD issue resolution work among multi-disciplinary “Centers of Excellence (CoEs)” who are responsible for delivering embedded software for either the gasoline Engine Control Module (ECM) or Hybrid Control Module (HCM). Lead in the development of KPI status on OBD algorithms and OBD issue resolution status to the production OBD supervisor, project center lead, Project Management Coordinators (PMCs) and Engine Management System (EMS) senior manager. Present status to quality gates from the application controls and software application department — engine On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) group.
Specific job responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Work with application controls Centers of Excellence (COEs) to ensure OBD requirements are met for the target market
  • Analyze Vehicle Function (VF) requirements and Component Functional Technical Specification (CFTS) requirements and provide feedback to systems engineering on OBD feasibility
  • Prepare Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) criteria matrix and OBD checklist for review with chief engineering and core diagnostics team
  • Facilitate diagnostic robustness reviews with gasoline and electrified powertrain teams (please refer to global powertrain development process for KPI-5065)
  • Participate in OBD software issue investigations and support FMEA development for new diagnostic strategies with systems engineers
  • Prepare and ensure Algorithm Change Requests (ACRs) for modified or new electrified diagnostic strategies or gasoline OBD control algorithms are submitted and implemented on time
  • Analyze new vehicle propulsion system network topology diagrams and hardware schematics and identify all required diagnostics for the target market
  • Prepare any documentation required by vehicle safety regulatory compliance department as deemed necessary by the either electrified OBD team lead or production OBD supervisor
  • Provide status on change to either the electrified OBD team lead or the production OBD supervisor, the product manager, and Project Management Coordinators (PMCs)
  • Support the creation and updating of diagnostic tool documentation
  • Analyze electrified Propulsion System Technical Specifications (PSTS) and develop OBD communication strategies in accordance with Unified Diagnostic Specification (UDS) and ISO standards 14229-1, 15765-x

Basic Qualifications:

  • Four year undergraduate or graduate degree relevant to engineering (I.e. Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Computer Information degrees, or other suitable degree related to engineering from a university)
  • Demonstrated industry experience in production powertrain software delivery
  • MATLAB / Simulink tool experience and embedded software development in creation of control algorithms
  • Very positive attitude with ability to facilitate with cross-functional experience
  • Good mentoring and coaching skills with ability to work directly with individuals and groups
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Good project coordination skills
  • Good experience leading teams, including multi-disciplinary teams
  • Flexibility — must be able to adapt to changing environment with minimal effect on productivity
  • Ability to communicate effectively across multiple levels of management
  • Willing to travel up to 20% away from primary location in Auburn Hills, Michigan

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Science in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, Chemical, Aerospace, or Software Engineering
  • Experience with electrified propulsion on-board diagnostics or gasoline on-board diagnostics
  • Experience in writing and using MATLAB scripts to process large datasets
  • Familiarity with microprocessor-based controls and development tools (emulators, debuggers, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Unified Diagnostic Specification (UDS) and ISO standards 14229-1, 15765-x and Open Diagnostic data eXchange ISO 22901
  • Familiarity with Diagnostic Data Table (DDT) creation or modification
  • Experience with hard real-time embedded applications
  • Experience with AUTOSAR and/or dSPACE system desk
  • Experience applying OBD 2 regulation to the creation and validation of diagnostics for new gasoline engines
  • Experience developing new gasoline engines
  • Experience in application of Brazil OBDBR2+ regulation, Euro6, and China6 regulations
  • Experience with Unified Diagnostic Specification (UDS) and ISO standards 14229-1, 15765-x
  • Experience with development of Open Diagnostic data eXchange (ODX) files
  • Experience with propulsion system network topology diagrams
  • Automotive experience either at work or university, such as Formula SAE, SAE EcoCAR, or other university automotive activity
  • 1 year ETAS INCA tool experience for collecting OBD2 data
  • 1 year of experience in automotive industry
  • Strong facilitation, mentoring, and coaching skills with ability to work directly with individuals and groups
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong project coordination skills
  • Strong experience leading teams, including multi-disciplinary teams
  • Strong understanding of the development of embedded software
  • Demonstrated experience with MS Office applications, including sample presentations in PowerPoint with respect to OBD2
