Your mission:
Optical free space communication systems on small satellites are a fast growing field in research and industry. Testing and implementation of new concepts in a space environment is nowadays much more affordable than a decade ago. This is due to lower launch costs of small satellites as well as a faster engineering time and the use of COST components where these are applicable. The Optical Communication Systems Group at the Institute of Communications and Navigation has been developing an optical communication payload for CubeSats, with the primary goal of demonstrating high speed optical downlinks between a CubeSat and Earth.
Since not only high speed, but also secure data links are required for some applications, DLR also develops optical system for quantum communications together with partners. One of these projects is a CubeSat-based payload for optical communications which has been modified to serve as a terminal for multiple quantum communications payloads, as well as for classical communications.
For ensuring operability in a space environment, subsystems and components must be tested under different conditions. Therefore the following main tasks will be:
  • Assembly of optical systems
  • Preparation of test setups
  • Evaluation of measurement data

  • study of Physics, Engineering Sciences, Electronics or similar
  • interest in space technology
  • experience in:
  • assembly and alignment of optical and optomechanical systems
  • optical metrology
  • programming (e.g. C++, Python, Matlab)
  • knowledge in Optics, especially laser optics; Material sciences; Electronics
